According to data from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, MetroWest experienced a 64% increase in the number of opioid-related overdose deaths from 2017 to 2018 (from 53 to 87 confirmed deaths). This was a greater increase than was seen across the state for those years.
Emergency medical service (EMS) incident data captured by the Department of Public Health also show a slight increase in opioid-related EMS incidents across the region. The database shows 554 incidents in the first three-quarters of 2019, compared to 720 incidents in all of 2018.
