Policy Watch: MassHealth Redetermination Starts April 1

March 17, 2023

Beginning April 1, MassHealth will resume the eligibility redetermination process for beneficiaries. The federal Public Health Emergency for COVID-19 (PHE) has prevented people from losing health coverage over the past three years. Now, about 2.3 million MassHealth recipients statewide will be contacted by mail to update their information and re-determine their eligibility.

Door-to-door canvassers will be conducting outreach to areas across the state with high concentrations of MassHealth beneficiaries, including Framingham, to direct people to resources. MassHealth recipients are encouraged to proactively update their information to limit lapses of coverage and to be on the lookout for the invitation to renew, which will be mailed to them in a large blue envelope.

All recipients, and particularly those who require long term care services, are encouraged to work with an Enrollment Assister. For more information, visit the MassHealth website.

Grantees of the foundation can support these efforts by sharing the information above with their clients. To help agencies prepare for this important re-determination process, the foundation held a webinar on February 28th with speakers from Project Bread and Health Care for All. A recording of that webinar can be seen here. An outreach kit related to the MassHealth redetermination efforts is also available here.
